So I’m registered for the Mini

In an ongoing effort to commit to this running thing, I’m trying to make smart decisions with the way I go about it.

That being said, I’m officially registered for the 2012 Kentucky Derby Festival Mini Marathon. Today was the last day to register before the fee increases, and seeing as how I’m frugal (read: cheap), I decided to go ahead and pay up.

Since the plan is to run a full marathon in the fall, the Mini offers a good opportunity to set an early long-term goal and then work toward it before I begin full-throttle training for the big show. Plus, it’s 13.1 miles shorter than a marathon.

I’ve thought about trying to run the Mini for a few years now, but never mustered the nerve to go through with it. I don’t know – maybe it’s the thought of all the cold weather training. (We’ve already been there.) I’ve had a ton of friends run it throughout the years, and they always seem to be so accomplished and proud when they talk about it. I want to go to there.

The training program for the Mini begins in early January, and I plan on posting a link to a Google doc showing my progress. No judging on what will surely be sloth-like splits.

So I’m throwing down my first challenge. I dare you to sign up today for the Mini. Or a 5K. Or any organized running event. Anything. We all have to start somewhere.

Who’s in?

  1. I too signed up for this race a few days ago to avoid the price increase. And then today, I did the same thing for the “other” Mini, the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon in Indianapolis. I suggest you sign up for it as well. Then, round out your raceway-themed racing year with the NC Half Marathon, which takes place on the Charlotte Speedway. That’s what I’m doing anyway.

    Have fun!

    • Thanks for the tip! I won’t be ready in time for the NC Half Marathon, but the OneAmerica 500 could be a possibility since Indy is close to where I live. Fun idea to theme your year around raceways, though!

  2. I’m running a 5k on Dec. 10th!! Haven’t trained for it at all, but I figure it will be my starting point for running again. And I agree with the signing up for the Indy 500 Half Marathon… If you do it, I’ll do it! 🙂
